Fluid Power Fundamentals

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to fluid power systems, focusing on both pneumatic and hydraulic technologies. Students will learn about the principles, components, and applications of fluid power systems, including basic circuits and power systems. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical exercises to prepare students for careers in industrial automation and fluid power engineering.

Prerequisite: Take an industrial safety knowledge test
Required material: Notebook and pen. Hands-on skills guides will be provided to students.
Dress code: Long pants and closed shoes.

Topics covered in this class are:

  • Introduction to Fluid Power Technology
  • Pneumatic Power Systems and Components
  • Fundamental Pneumatic Circuit Design
  • Hydraulic Power Systems and Components
  • Fundamental Hydraulic Circuit Design
  • Pneumatic and Hydraulic Actuators (cylinders and motors)

Objectives

After completing this class student will be able to demonstrate or perform the following:
  • Define what fluid power is, and its characteristics.
  • Describe the function and operation of hydraulic pumps, regulator and relief valve.
  • Describe the function of the pneumatic compressor, regulator and relief valve.
  • Describe the operation and function of quick couplings used in hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Describe the function of different directional control valves.
  • Connect and operate basic cylinder circuits.
  • Describe fluid power symbols and circuit diagrams.
  • Describe the relationship between pressure and cylinder force.
  • Connect and operate flow control valves and actuators.
