College of Southern Nevada’s (CSN) Division of Workforce & Economic Development (DWED)
Fundamentals of Electricity (Young People) -12 hours
Audience: Kids & young people (recommended ages 8–14).
Format: Hands-on, after-school workshop using 9V batteries and plug-in “LEGO-style” breadboards (no soldering).
Total time: 12 hours (8 sessions × 1.5 hours).
Prerequisites: None—just curiosity!
Course overview:
Spark curiosity with a fun, hands-on introduction to electricity. Learners build mini-circuits on a reusable protoboard—like LEGO for electronics—using a safe 9V battery. Through quick experiments and creative challenges, students discover voltage, current, resistance, switches, bulbs, buzzers, motors, batteries among others, then combine parts to design their own gadget to demo on the final day.
You’ll learn to:
-
Use a breadboard to connect parts without soldering
-
Read simple circuit diagrams (symbols for battery, lamp, resistor, switch, etc.)
-
Explain voltage, current, and resistance at a beginner level (Ohm’s Law lite)
-
Build a basic series/parallel circuits
-
Safely power a circuit with a 9V battery
-
Design and present a small original project
