A comprehensive course developed for licensed RNs to acquire knowledge and skills needed to work in the surgical suites of a hospital or surgical center. Course curriculum will include an Introduction to Perioperative nursing, Preparing the Patient for Surgery, Instrument Processing, Aseptic Practices: Preparing the Sterile Field and the Patient for Surgery, Positioning the Patient for Surgery, Prevention of Retained Surgical Items, Preventions of Injury: Hemostasis, Tourniquet, and Electrosurgical Equipment, Effective Management of Surgical Instruments, Wound Management: Wound Closure, Anesthesia and Medication Safety, and Environment of Care and Life Safety. The tuition for the course includes ACLS and PALS certification, curriculum book, and online study materials. Course pre-requisites are Basic EKG & CPR certification. Students may test out of EKG certification with a 90% test score and 100% identification of life-threatening arrhythmias. This 16 week course is approximately 440 hours of lecture, lab, and clinical practice. CEU's are provided by the College of Southern Nevada. Instructor: Christina Sommers, MSN, RN and staff.
