Basic Rider Course I (Motorcycle) North Las Vegas

Basic Rider Course 1 Class 
Requirements to enroll:
  • You must be at least 15½ years of age
  • Have a current class C driver's License or obtained a learner's permit
  • Students under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian sign their class waiver in person or have it notarized prior to the start of class. The waivers and Jurat will be sent with the e course link.
  • Be able to balance/ride a two-wheeled bicycle
  • Be in good physical condition which means:
    • Strength: You need sufficient strength to control the motorcycle's weight, especially during low-speed maneuvers, pushing it around, and in emergency situations. This includes:
      • Upper body strength: For steering and controlling the handlebars.
      • Core strength: To maintain balance and stability.
      • Leg, hips and back strength: To support the bike and for balance, especially when stopping and starting.
    • Balance and Coordination: Motorcycle riding heavily relies on your sense of balance and coordination for smooth maneuvering, turning, and staying upright.
    • Flexibility and Mobility: Adequate flexibility allows you to comfortably reach the controls, lean into turns, and react quickly to unexpected situations.
    • Vision: Good vision is critical for identifying hazards, reading traffic signs, and judging distances. This includes:
      • Visual acuity: Clarity of vision at different distances.
      • Peripheral vision: Awareness of your surroundings to the sides.
      • Depth perception: Judging distances accurately.
    • Reaction Time: Quick reflexes are essential for responding promptly to hazards and maintaining control of the motorcycle.
  • Medical Conditions to Consider:
Certain medical conditions can potentially impair your ability to ride safely. It's crucial to discuss any health concerns with your doctor and honestly assess your capabilities. Some examples include:
    • Conditions affecting strength or coordination: Arthritis, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, nerve damage.
    • Conditions causing loss of consciousness or seizures: Epilepsy, heart conditions, uncontrolled diabetes.
    • Conditions affecting vision: Glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts (if significantly impairing vision).
    • Cardiovascular conditions: Unstable angina, severe heart failure.
    • Vestibular disorders: Conditions affecting balance and causing dizziness.
  • Medications: Certain medications can cause drowsiness, dizziness, or other side effects that could impair riding ability.
  • Recommendations:
    • Consult your doctor: Discuss your interest in motorcycling with your physician, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. They can provide personalized advice based on your health status. 1  
  • Have a basic command of the English language
  • Have basic computer proficiency to access the MSF eCourse and print certificate or arrange for CSN staff to assist you to do the e course
  • Be a Nevada resident 


 
The completion card you will receive after successful completion will be printed using the information from your student profile.  This is the document you will take to NV DMV so it must be correct.  Please make sure the student profile has the following information:
Your complete first name as it appears on your NV Driver's license
Your middle initial(s)
Your complete last name as it appears on your NV Driver's license and any other items such as JR or II.

THE FOLLOWING CLOTHING IS REQUIRED:
  • DOT approved 3/4 or full-face motorcycle helmet
  • Eye protection (Glasses/Sunglasses or face shield)
  • Gloves with full fingers
  • Long sleeved shirt or jacket
  • Long pants (jeans or similar fabric with no holes)
  • Over the ankle boots with a hard sole: High heels or high top cloth athletic shoes are NOT permitted.
Basic Rider Course Class Preparation.
As part of the Basic Rider Course, students are required to complete the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Basic e Course. The cost of the e Course in included in your registration fee. The e Course takes approximately 5 hours to complete from start to finish. You do not have to complete the entire course in one sitting. You can exit and come back later and the program will pick up where you left off. Once completed, print or save a copy of your completion certificate and bring it to the first-class session. The online e Course must be completed prior to your class start date. You will not be allowed to ride in the class if the e Course is not fully complete.  You will receive the link to the e Course via email from Laurie.Sanders@csn.edu, at least 15 days prior to the start date of your class. If you have not received an email by this time please check your spam folder. If it is not found, contact Laurie.Sanders@csn.edu or call her at 775-625-9440.

IMPORTANT: The MSF e Courses are NOT accepted as a license waiver by any state department of motor vehicles, or as a license to ride a motorcycle or a learner’s permit. 
 
Topics covered during this course are:
  • Basic fundamentals of motorcycle operation
  • Physical and mental skills
  • How to manage risk and develop a good mental riding strategy
  • Effectively braking, swerving and cornering
 
To receive a completion card students MUST complete the e course and PASS a riding skills evaluation. After successfully completing the course, you will receive a completion card, which you take to the DMV for your class M endorsement. The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles waives their testing for successful graduates of this course. Motorcycles are provided for this course.


ATTENDANCE AT ALL SESSIONS IS MANDATORY.  IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE E COURSE, ARE LATE, MISS A SESSION, DO NOT ATTEND or ARE DISMISSED, YOUR COURSE FEE WILL BE FORFEITED.

ALL CLASSES ARE NONREFUNDABLE.

Please read:  ALL CLASSES ARE NONREFUNDABLE. PLEASE CHOOSE YOUR CLASSES CAREFULLY. As noted all noncredit courses listed in this schedule are NONREFUNDABLE. You may however transfer your fee to another class by requesting a transfer seven (7) calendar days prior to the start date of the class in which you are currently enrolled. If you fail to request your transfer within the 7-day period of time, you will forfeit your tuition fee.
